What is Apple Pay and How Does it Work?

 Apple Pay is a mobile payment and digital wallet service by Apple Inc. that lets users make payments in-store, in-app and online. It's currently available on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models only and requires the user to authenticate using Touch ID before making payments. The service relies on NFC (Near Field Communication) for communication between the phone and the payment terminal.

How Does Apple Pay Work?

When you're ready to make a payment, simply hold your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID. Your iPhone will vibrate and beep to let you know that the payment has been accepted. You'll also see a confirmation message on your screen.

You can also use Apple Pay to make in-app purchases on your iPhone. Just select Apple Pay as the payment method and hold your phone near the contactless reader.

What Can I Use Apple Pay For?

At the moment, you can use Apple Pay to pay for goods and services at participating retailers in the following countries:

  • United States (US): You can use Apple Pay to make payments at all merchants that accept contactless payments, these include Best Buy, Walgreens, Macy's, Bloomingdales, Staples and McDonalds.   • United Kingdom (UK): You can use Apple Pay to make payments at all contactless terminals in the UK including Transport for London (TfL) buses and trams, most major contactless merchants accept Apple Pay.   • Australia: As of now, there are no merchants that accept Apple Pay in Australia.

What Are the Fees for Using Apple Pay?

There are no fees for using Apple Pay. However, your credit card company may charge you a foreign transaction fee if you use your credit card to make a purchase in a foreign currency.

How Secure is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is extremely secure and uses multiple layers of security to protect your payments. These include Touch ID, your passcode, a unique device identifier and a cryptogram that is generated for each transaction.

Apple also does not store your credit card numbers on your iPhone or in the cloud, so they cannot be accessed by anyone else.
